If you’ve ever visited the Lee G. Simmons Safari Park in Ashland, Nebraska, you’ve no doubt noticed how beautiful and peaceful this little piece of wilderness is.
The four-mile driving route takes you through several different areas where you can see bison, elk, deer, prairie dogs, and a variety of birds.
A few of the areas require you to get out and walk a bit to see animals like bears and wolves, but you can still fully enjoy the park from the car.
But have you ever wished you could extend your stay? That’s exactly what you can do with Wildlife Safari Park campsites! These unique experiences let you sleep near animals, learn all about the park’s residents, and even enjoy a campfire and s’mores.
There are several choices for sleeping arrangements. You can rent one of the park’s five canvas tents or stay at the Wildlife Education Center, a comfortable building with electricity and running water.
For the more adventurous campers, there is also the possibility of camping in/near your car. Bring a tent or just set up somewhere comfortable inside your vehicle. Note: Motorhomes, pop-up motorhomes and fifth wheel motorhomes are not permitted.
The Wildlife Safari Park offers campsites open to the public (by reservation), each with a different theme. Whether you want to catch a meteor shower, gaze at the stars, chase fireflies, boo with owls, or take a night hike, you’ll find a camping experience that’s perfect for you.
Park camping programs run from May through early November and typically run from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. the following morning. There are special camping events for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Halloween, as well as a long list of educational events throughout the summer.
There are evening campsites designed for young children or families who don’t want to stay overnight. If you are camping in a group, you can even enjoy a private campsite! Check the wildlife park’s website for more information on camping programs, including dates, times, and requirements. Reservations are required for every camping experience. Follow other park news on the park’s Facebook page.
While in the area, be sure to visit another of Ashland’s treasures, the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum.
