TACOMA, Wash. — The city is working to clear an encampment under the Tacoma Freeway on Friday after concerns were raised that one of Pierce County’s largest camps was becoming a safety hazard.

Activity at the camp, located on Puyallup Avenue under Interstate 705 and a few blocks from the Tacoma Dome, began to pick up Friday morning as people were seen moving objects and structures.

City employees were seen at the camp Friday morning, and the city said outreach to camp residents is continuing. Clearing should take a week. The city said it counted 68 tents between two parking lots and a total of 26 people at the camp Thursday.

Homeless advocates said the issue of these evictions disrupts the lives of these people as they look for another place to go.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee is pushing lawmakers to pass a bill that would get homeless people off the streets within months. The bill would require state jurisdictions to not only clean up homeless camps, but also provide resources and help people transition into safe housing.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. If pushed through, it will go to the full state Senate and then to the House.
